For the last five years British customers have paid more for their gas as Britain has exported its surplus gas to Europe where gas prices have been higher due to a lack of competition. This higher European price has set the gas price in the UK.  Millions of UK consumers now face annual fuel bills of over £1000 for the first time in history.

Too little, too late is the voice of the UK consumer, fed up with extortionate power pricing.

Nobody is fooled by the Russians throwing their scraps back at us with a paltry token price drop, "we all played monopoly as children Gazprom."

The watchdog, Energywatch, was urging customers to switch suppliers, adding that this announcement was the "bleakest day yet" for gas consumers.

It may come as quite a surprise to many gas consumers to find that the UK is still a major exporter of natural gas, but is also importing gas from the European market, this is where British Gas lays the blame. Just like the emperor Nero, we continue to fiddle as Rome burns down around us.

Ofgem is the regulator for the industry, it claims that 300,000 consumers per month, have been switching suppliers in a move to combat the price rises. We predict that this trend will rise in the coming years.

Energy regulator Ofgem has welcomed a report published in Feb 06 by the National Audit Office (NAO) showing the potential savings to customers resulting from National Grid Gas’ sale of four of its eight local gas distribution networks.

Sir John Bourn, the Comptroller and Auditor General, who is the head of the NAO, said: “At a time when consumers are facing rising gas prices, I am encouraged to see that the changes to the gas industry arising from the sale of the networks have potential benefits for consumers. Ofgem has done well so far. I will be looking to Ofgem to maintain its commitment to ensuring that the potential benefits are realised."
